It’s all about the details
The term “accessory” was first used in the 19th century. Accessories can have a practical function: gloves protect hands from the cold, and hats protect from the sun. Accessories such as bags and pockets can be used to carry items that will not fit in pockets. Traditionally, accessories have been used for decoration and distinction. They reflect the culture of the moment and the social status of the owner. They are as much a part of the overall fashion system as clothing, if not a component that changes faster than fashion (clothing).
Accessories: stories of use and etiquette
Who, when and why wore this or that accessory? “Accessories are a girl’s best friend” tells the visitor a particularly complete and historical story about the various accessories, their use and etiquette. The way the accessory was worn for every occasion was of great importance. Sometimes an accessory was so distinctive for a certain period that it gave its name to the period itself. Think of the “Age of Wigs” or “Millstone Collar.” Accessories could also indicate the time: the longer the glove, the later in the day.
