Patchwork (patchwork and quilting) is the art of creating textile masterpieces from multi-colored pieces of fabric with millimeter geometric precision. The main secret to the perfect convergence of the corners in the center of the block is a strict seam allowance of 6.3 mm (quarter inch), the use of a self-healing mat and a rotary cutter. In this video tutorial with Svetlana Molchanova, we are assembling the simplest classic block “Square in a Square” step by step.
Contents of the video tutorial on patchwork
- 1. Quilter's tools: 45 mm roller knife, acrylic ruler and mat
- 2. Precise cutting of cotton strips and squares without thread distortion
- 3. Setting the 1/4 inch (6.3 mm) presser foot for a lockstitch machine
- 4. Sequential stitching with a “garland” and ironing the seams clockwise
- Expert advice: how to avoid stretching the fabric when ironing triangles
- Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
1. Patchwork fabrics
We use 100% cotton fabric of a special plain weave (American Cotton), which does not fade, does not shrink and does not crumble when cut.
2. Chain Piecing
The parts are sewn continuously one after another without cutting the thread between pairs, which speeds up the assembly of the fabric by 3-4 times.
3. Ironing into a lock
The allowances of adjacent strips are ironed in opposite directions so that when joined, the seams fit “lock” with zero thickness.
Advice to the master
When ironing blocks, do not move the iron left and right - just lower and raise the sole strictly vertically so as not to deform the oblique cuts. And you can download patterns for products with patchwork elements in our catalog ready-made patterns.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is the stitch length for patchwork?
The stitch length is 1.8–2.0 mm, so that the seams do not separate during subsequent quilt stitching.
Do I need to wash patchwork fabric before cutting?
Special quilting cotton can not be washed, but only thoroughly steamed with an iron.
