How to Grade Up a Sewing Pattern by One Size: Easy Method for T-Shirts, Turtlenecks, and Hoodies

Discovering a well-drafted base pattern for knitwear is every sewist's dream. But what if you possess a proven t-shirt, turtleneck, or hoodie pattern that is exactly one size too small? There is no need to draft a completely new pattern from scratch. In professional garment construction, the parallel shift grading technique allows you to accurately scale front, back, and sleeve pieces by one size while preserving ergonomic balance and armscye curve proportions. In this masterclass, we break down the exact metric guidelines step by step.

Required Pattern Drafting Tools

  • Base pattern pieces (front, back, and sleeve);
  • Tracing paper or roll of drafting grid paper;
  • Clear styling ruler, french curve ruler, and tape measure;
  • 0.5 mm mechanical pencil and masking tape.

Principles of Parallel Shift Pattern Grading

Standard apparel sizing charts feature a 4 cm total chest circumference increment between adjacent sizes (1 cm per quarter of the garment). Shifting key anchor points along X and Y axes evenly redistributes width and length without skewing design lines.

Step 1. Front and Back Chest Line Adjustment

Position the original bodice pattern onto tracing paper. Along the bust and back balance line, lift or shift the pattern upward by 0.5 cm.

Step 2. Shifting Outward toward Side Seam

Shift the pattern piece outward from the center front/back line toward the side seam by 1.0 cm. Trace the updated side seam line straight down to the hem.

Step 3. Deepening the Armscye Curve

Lower the base underarm point of the armscye by 0.5 cm to ensure comfortable underarm ease for the larger size, and blend smoothly with your french curve.

Step 4. Scaling the Sleeve: Cap, Hem, and Inseam

  • Widen the hemline by 0.5 cm on each side;
  • Shift the sleeve pattern outward toward the underarm inseam by 1.0 cm;
  • Lower the sleeve cap baseline by 0.25 cm along the armscye intersection;
  • Redraw the sleeve cap curve and inseam line smoothly.

Step 5. Truing Seams and Balance Check

True side seams and verify that sleeve cap length exceeds total bodice armscye by 1.5–2 cm for balanced knit sleeve insertion.
