A neat, flat and elastic neck is the main sign of factory quality of any basic or designer T-shirt. A stretched wavy collar or overlock seam allowances sticking out from the inside instantly reduces the cost of the product. In this master class, we will examine in detail the professional technology of stitching ribbed/cashcorse facings with a clean seam closure along the back with keeper tape.

Calculation of the length and stretch coefficient of the neck tape
The main secret to a perfect fit of the neck without creases is the accurate calculation of the length of the facing. For ribana with lycra or cashcorse, the length of the binding is calculated using the formula: Neck cut length × 0.75–0.80 (plus 1.5 cm for stitching into a ring).
Step-by-step installation of facing on a 4-thread overlocker
- Fold the binding in half lengthwise, wrong side in, and iron.
- Divide the neckline and trim into 4 equal parts, securing the control points with pins.
- Sew in the binding using a 4-thread overlocker, evenly stretching only the binding itself (it is forbidden to stretch the cut of the T-shirt!).
Cleaning the back seam with keeper tape
To cover the overlock seam along the back from shoulder to shoulder, a cotton keeper tape 10–12 mm wide is sewn. It not only provides the aesthetic appearance of a premium item, but also protects the shoulder seams from deformation during washing and wearing.
Finish stitching on a cover stitching machine and WTO
The final step is to lay an elastic finishing stitch of a chain stitch or flat stitch at a distance of 1-2 mm from the joint seam, after which the knot is carefully ironed with a steam iron.
Knitting Technologist Council
When sewing keeper tape, use a special tape guide foot. This guarantees a strictly parallel stitch without offset. And our proven ready-made patterns will help you sew a T-shirt with the perfect cut.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Why does the neck of a T-shirt ripple after washing?
A wave occurs when the binding tension is insufficient when stitching (the coefficient is too high, for example 0.9 instead of 0.75) or when the cut of the machine’s fabric is stretched under a heavy presser foot.
Can I use the same piping for the neckline as on the T-shirt?
100% cotton satin stitch does not have sufficient elasticity and will stretch over time. For the neckline it is always better to use cashcorse or ribana with 5% lycra.
