Required Materials and Tools
- Main Fabric — viscose/rayon knit, modal, cotton jersey (2.0 to 2.6 m);
- Clear elastic or stay tape — for shoulder seam reinforcement;
- Threads — 4 cones of serger thread (textured looper threads recommended);
- Equipment — 4-thread serger, sewing machine with stretch needles (#70–80);
- Tailor's scissors, pins, chalk, steam iron.
Step 1. Fabric Selection & Pre-Washing
Boho dresses require fluid draping fabric. Pre-wash or thoroughly steam viscose jersey prior to cutting, as rayon knits can shrink up to 8%.
Step 2. Cutting Front, Back, and Sleeves
Fold fabric lengthwise matching selvages. The relaxed A-line silhouette is created by gently flaring side seams from the armscye down to the hemline. Add 7 mm seam allowances for serging and 2.5–3 cm hem allowance.
Step 3. Stabilizing Shoulder Seams
Insert clear elastic tape into the shoulder seam along the back bodice to support the weight of the flowing skirt. Serge and press toward back.
Step 4. Constructing the Soft Mock Neck
Cut a rectangular collar band (length = neck circumference × 0.85–0.9, height = 6–8 cm). Join into a ring, fold lengthwise wrong sides together, press, divide into quadrants, and serge to neckline.
Step 5. Flat Sleeve Insertion
Pin sleeve cap center to shoulder seam and serge flat into the open armhole without stretching.
Step 6. Continuous Side Seams & Boho Volume
Align underarm intersections and serge in one continuous run from sleeve hem down to dress hem.
Step 7. Hem Hanging & Finishing
Allow the dress to hang on a dress form for 8–12 hours to let biases settle. True the hemline evenly from the floor, serge raw edge, and topstitch a 2 cm double needle hem.
