In the 2nd part of the video of the master class on sewing a T-shirt, we perform the most important couture knot - processing the round neck with elastic ribbed tape with Lycra, closing the cut along the back with cotton keeper tape, sewing the sleeves into the open armhole, connecting the sides and sleeves with a single seam, as well as ideally hemming the bottom on a flat-stitch machine (cover stitcher).
Contents of part 2 of the video lesson
- 1. Calculation and ironing of ribana neck facing (coefficient 0.78–0.82)
- 2. Sewing the binding into the neck using an overlocker with 4 control marks
- 3. Treatment of the back sprout with keeper tape (luxury closed seam)
- 4. Sewing the sleeves into the open armhole and sewing the side seams
- 5. Hemming the bottom of the product and sleeves on a cover machine
- Designer's advice: how to achieve a perfect fit of the neck without lag
- Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
1. Formula for the perfect neck
Rib tape length = neck circumference × 0.78 + 1.5 cm for allowance. The binding is sewn into a ring and ironed in half with the inside out.
2. Clean stitching of the binding
The binding and neckline are divided into 4 equal parts. The binding seam is aligned with the left shoulder seam or center back seam, and the overlock stitch is applied with only the binding evenly stretched (the main piece is not stretched!).
3. Luxury keeper tape
The neck seam along the back is covered with cotton braid, preventing chafing of the neck and deformation of the shape during prolonged wear.
4. Stitching into an open armhole
The sleeve is sewn into the armhole before the side seam is stitched - this is an industrial high-speed method that ensures a perfectly smooth edge.
Advice to the master
Before hemming the hem on the cover stitch, iron a 2.5 cm seam allowance using a cardboard template. And you can download proven patterns for T-shirts of all sizes in our catalog ready-made patterns.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Why does the neck of a T-shirt wave (“faldit”)?
The reason is that the binding is too long or the cut of the neck of the main fabric is stretched by the overlock foot.
What can I use instead of a cover machine for hemming the hem?
Double knitting needle (Twin Stretch Needle 4.0 mm) on a household sewing machine.
