A flap patch pocket is a signature tailored accent found on utility jackets, safari overshirts, army jackets, and cargo garments. While straightforward in design, it demands millimeter precision: the flap is prominently featured on the chest or hip, where uneven corners, puckered seams, or mismatched alignment immediately stand out. In this masterclass, we explore the exact tailoring steps to interface, turn, and attach a pristine pocket flap with clean enclosed seam finishing.

Required Materials and Tools
- Main garment fabric (cotton, twill, denim, linen, or wool);
- Medium-weight fusible interfacing;
- Matching thread and topstitching thread;
- Cardboard pressing template;
- Sewing machine, fabric marker or tailor's chalk, steam iron.
Step 1. Cutting and Interfacing Pocket Flap Pieces
Cut outer flap and facing. Trim facing piece slightly smaller (1–2 mm along edges) so the seam turns naturally to the underside. Interface outer flap on-grain.
Step 2. Stitching, Trimming Corners, and Underpressing
Place pieces right sides facing and stitch outer three edges at 5–7 mm. Take one diagonal stitch across corners, clip seam allowances to 3 mm, turn right side out, and press with a crisp 1 mm roll to the underside.
Step 3. Topstitching and Marking Attachment Guidelines
Topstitch outer edges at 5 mm. Mark the exact placement line on raw upper edge parallel to the finished lower edge.
Step 4. Constructing and Edgestitching the Patch Pocket
Hem top edge, press side and bottom seam allowances over a cardboard guide, align on garment, and edgestitch at 1–2 mm with corner bartacks.
Step 5. Installing the Flap with Clean Enclosed Seam
Position flap facing upward with raw edge pointing down. Stitch along placement line, trim seam to 3 mm, fold flap downward, press, and topstitch at 5–7 mm to enclose raw edges completely.
