A hidden zipper is the best choice for dresses, skirts and light jackets, when the fastener should be almost invisible on the product. However, many novice craftsmen are afraid to install it, fearing that the lock will jam and the stitching will be too far from the teeth.
In fact, sewing a hidden zipper neatly the first time is easier than it seems. The main thing is to use a special foot and follow the correct sequence of operations.
What you will need for work:
- Concealed zipper of the required length (it is advisable to take with a margin of 2-3 cm).
- Special foot for hidden zipper (with grooves on the sole).
- Iron with steam generator for preliminary preparation and WTO.
- Adhesive edge (formband or thread-stitching tape) 1–1.5 cm wide.
- Tailor's pins and high-quality threads to match the fabric.
Step-by-step sewing instructions
Step 1: Preparing the Zipper and Cuts
- Before sewing in a zipper, be sure to iron it (especially if the braid is textile and not synthetic) or lightly steam it so that it does not shrink after the first wash.
- Open the zipper and lightly iron its folds as they unfold so that the tape lies flat and does not curl inward.
- Duplicate the fabric sections along the zipper opening with a narrow strip of adhesive edge or interlining. This will protect the thin fabric from stretching and deformation during wear.
Step 2. Basting or pinching with cut details
- Place the right half of the zipper with the right side facing the right side of the right piece of the product. The teeth of the zipper should coincide with the intended seam line (allowance).
- Pin the zipper across the edge or carefully hand stitch close to the teeth. Repeat the procedure for the left side.
- Important nuance: The upper plastic zipper stop should be located approximately 1–1.5 cm below the cut of the neckline or waistband (this distance is necessary for clean finishing with facing or waistband).
Step 3. Working with a special foot
- Install a special zipper foot on your sewing machine.
- Bend the spiral (teeth) of the zipper with your finger so that it straightens, and place this groove exactly under the notch on the sole of the foot.
- Lower the needle. Sew from top to bottom, making sure that the foot gently bends the teeth and the needle lies close to them, but does not pierce the plastic spiral itself.
- Having reached the runner (the foot will rest on it about 1–1.5 cm before the end), stop, backtack the stitching and cut the thread. Repeat the operation for the second side.
Step 4: Stitch the seam below the zipper
- Fasten the zipper and check the evenness of the seams (waist, yoke).
- Fold the parts of the product below the end of the zipper with the right sides inward, bending the free tail of the zipper up.
- Use a regular single zipper foot or an all-purpose zipper foot. Start stitching so that the seam smoothly meets the end of the zipper stitch (it is advisable to go 1-2 stitches higher and slightly to the right so that there is no tension in the fabric and the hole at the transition).
- Stitch the seam to the bottom of the product, press the seam allowances with steam.
Useful life hacks for flawless results:
- Preliminary ironing of the zipper: Never skip this stage - the straightened spiral fits perfectly evenly under the needle.
- Edge Stabilization: If the fabric is loose, elastic or very thin, be sure to use thread-stitching adhesive tape.
- Control the movement of the lock: Check the finished fastener - the pawl should move smoothly, and the fabric should not get under the teeth.
