Trying on a shoulder product often brings surprises in the back area. Unsightly horizontal or vertical creases can spoil the appearance of even the most expensive material and impeccably executed cut. To correct a defect, it is important to correctly determine its nature, because the reasons for the appearance of folds under the armhole, on the shoulder blades or along the waist line are radically different.

Horizontal pleats under the armhole and on the shoulder blades

If transverse folds form directly under the back armhole or in the area of the shoulder blades, this is the main sign that the product does not have enough volume in the width or length of the back.

Possible causes of the defect:

  • A hunched back or highly protruding shoulder blades, for which the standard pattern depth was not enough.
  • The back armhole is too narrow or the back is too narrow in general, causing the fabric to stretch and bunch up.
  • Insufficient depth of the back shoulder dart (if provided by the model).

How to fix it on a pattern:

  • Release the allowances along the middle back seam (if they allow it) or add additional volume through the deepening of the shoulder dart.
  • On the pattern itself, make a horizontal cut at the level of the shoulder blades and move the parts apart by 0.5–1.5 cm, increasing the length of the back in the center.
  • Check the width of the back at the armhole level: if necessary, add 0.5–1 cm to the back armhole line, gradually tapering off the increase towards the side seam.

Vertical pleats on the back

Vertical creases usually appear as hanging “voids” or excess tissue. Most often they are concentrated closer to the center of the back or at the base of the neck.

Possible causes of the defect:

  • The back was too wide for your figure. The arms and shoulders do not fill the allotted volume, and the fabric sags in vertical folds.
  • The back is too flat with a deep fit in the basic pattern, designed for a standard or stooped figure.
  • Imbalance: the product is shifted forward, causing excess length on the back.

How to fix it on a pattern:

  • Place the excess fabric in the middle seam of the back (if the model has a center seam). To do this, pin off the excess directly on the figure or model, transferring the measurement to the pattern.
  • Reduce the width of the back at the level of the shoulder blades and waist, evenly cutting off the excess along the armhole line and side seams.
  • Make sure that the neck of the back fits snugly against the neck - sometimes the excess width of the neck pulls the entire structure down, creating vertical creases.

House folds under the waist

If the creases go down from the waist or hips, the problem lies in the discrepancy between the lengths and volumes of the lower part of the product.

Possible causes of the defect:

  • Bent posture (strong deflection in the lower back), in which the length of the back from the seventh cervical vertebra to the waist is shorter by measurement than the front, and the pattern did not take this into account.
  • The cut of the product is too straight for a figure with pronounced curves.

How to fix it on a pattern:

  • Shape or deepen the waist darts on the back so that the garment follows the natural curve of the lower back.
  • Shorten the back along the midline at the waist by the amount of the figure's deflection (usually from 1 to 2 cm), reducing the cut to nothing at the side seams.

Prevention for the perfect cut

  • Always make a preliminary layout using inexpensive fabric when working with complex or new patterns.
  • Carefully take measurements of shoulder height and back length to waist separately, taking into account the characteristics of your posture.
  • Remember that high-quality wet-heat treatment (WHT) can correct minor fit errors even at the stage of product assembly.
