The V-shaped neckline (toe) visually lengthens the neck and gives the basic T-shirt a sophisticated, sporty, elegant look. However, processing an acute corner requires filigree cutting precision and calculation of the tension of the elastic rib tape. In the 1st part of our video tutorial, we look in detail at modeling the depth of the cutout, preparing the shelf and stitching the corner of the plank end-to-end.
Contents of part 1 of the video lesson
- 1. Modeling a V-neck on a T-shirt front pattern
- 2. Calculation of the length and width of the ribbed and lycra facing
- 3. Forming an acute corner of the binding: stitching at an angle of 90° and ironing
- 4. Stabilizing the top of the front cutout with a piece of thin knitted dublerin
- Designer's advice: how to calculate the cutting angle of the trim to suit the depth of the neckline
- Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
1. V-cut geometry
The depth of the cut from the jugular cavity is selected individually (standard 8–12 cm). The neck line of the shelf is formed by a smooth concave line for a better fit to the body.
2. Preparation of the ribbed strip
The width of the trim when cut is 4.0–4.5 cm (finished 1.5–1.8 cm). The strip is folded in half with the wrong side inward and ironed in an arc.
3. Corner stitching
The ends of the binding are folded at an angle, the bisector line of the angle is marked and a stitch is laid on a sewing machine with a small stitch (2.0 mm).
4. Strengthening the top of the toe
The top of the corner on the shelf is strengthened from the inside with a piece of adhesive dublerin 2x2 cm, so that the overlock stitch does not spill out the loops of the knitwear when cutting the allowance.
Tailor's advice
Always iron the corner seam allowances of the tape flat - this will make the toe flat and eliminate the bump in the center of the chest. And you can download exact patterns for T-shirts with a V-neck in the catalog ready-made patterns.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Which knitwear is best to use for a V-shaped facing?
Ribana with lycra (95% cotton, 5% elastane) with a density of 220–240 g/m² with a high coefficient of shape recovery.
Why does the corner of the V-neck bulge forward?
The reason is the insufficient tension coefficient of the binding on the sides of the neck.
