Creating a commercially successful clothing model is a strict technological route that combines the inspiration of the designer with the mathematical precision of the designer and the discipline of the sewing flow. Errors at the initial sketch stage or incorrectly chosen allowances lead to costly defects of the entire batch. In this material we describe the classic 7-stage development cycle of a garment from idea to serial production.
Contents of the Development Guide
- 1. Mood board, technical sketch (Technical Drawing) and selection of companion fabric
- 2. Construction of a basic design in CAD and development of a set of primary patterns
- 3. Sewing the model from calico and fitting it on a figure/mannequin of a typical build
- 4. Balance adjustment, gradation of size range (XS–XXL) and preparation of technical map
- 5. Sewing the reference sample (Gold Sample) from the original fabric and putting it into production
- Advice to the designer: how to create a technological map of knots for seamstresses
- Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
1. Technical drawing
Unlike an artistic sketch, a technical drawing shows exact proportions, division lines, reliefs, width of finishing stitches, buttons and pockets to scale.
2. Copy of the model
Sewing a model from inexpensive fabric allows you to evaluate the freedom of movement, armhole height and neck depth before cutting the expensive base material.
3. Gold Sample
The reference sample is approved by the customer and serves as an inviolable standard for the quality of seams and WTO for the quality control inspector at a garment factory.
Advice to the designer
Record all changes made during the mock-up fitting immediately into a digital CAD file. And ready-made verified patterns of basic designs can be downloaded from the catalog ready-made patterns.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How many design iterations are considered normal for a complex jacket?
Typically 2-3 layouts are required to achieve a couture shoulder fit.
What does the Tech Pack include?
A sheet of measures of the finished product, a material consumption map, a layout diagram and a list of machine operations.
Impeccable patterns are the basis of any sewing masterpiece. Subscribe to our video channel Pattern - Ready-made patterns.
