On TikTok, Gen Z says that slim denim is officially out of fashion, but many millennials who grew up with the trend in early fall still have a strong love for it. Personally, it reminded me of wearing skinny jeans in high school in the late 2000s when they had a big moment. I literally squeezed into women's jeans - the tighter the better! — and modeled her entire denim wardrobe after stars like Nicole Eichi and Lindsay Lohan.
I've given my skinny jeans a rest these days, but the skinny denim look is still alive and well. Denim brands such as J Brand, Levi's, Wrangler and others continue to sell them as classic offerings; Skinny jeans have gone out of style and become an essential part of the off-season wardrobe. However, in celebrity land, there's a hot new jean in town that threatens to steal the skinny spotlight entirely: big baggy jeans.
Over the past few weeks, stylish stars like Hailey Bieber, Tracee Ellis Eoss, Bella Hadid, Katie Holmes and more have stepped out in roomier, wider-legged denim. The move makes sense given the current times: Over the past year, we've all been looking to dress for comfort, so why don't we approach our jeans that way? Celebs have styled oversized jeans in a variety of chic ways, offsetting their understated look with formal coats, sky-high stilettos and It bags. While skinny jeans go great with any outfit, baggy jeans have the opposite effect and add a laid-back feel to any outfit. Plus, they're much more comfortable - what's not to like?
It turns out that it's not just celebrities who are tired of skinny. I asked some of my colleagues what they thought about the new look of baggy denim, and many of them are ready to ditch their skinny jeans. "I'm glad that skinny jeans go against the grain," says Cassandra Pintro, editorial producer. “I've always been drawn to fashion that feels looser, and skinny jeans don't cut it.” Beauty writer Akili King agrees. “I don’t really wear skinny jeans; I like mom jeans or wide leg jeans,” she says. “I like to be comfortable and free.”
Market editor Rachel Besser also shares this sentiment, although she doesn't rule out ultra-skinny jeans entirely. She says: "I hate skinny jeans and they make me feel like I'm on parade, naked, under unflattering fluorescent lighting - but a few years ago I felt the same way about flip-flops, so maybe I like skinny jeans." ? She wasn't wrong: As with any trend, in a few months, most likely, all the stars will be wearing skinny jeans, and the cycle will begin all over again. But for now it's all about three words - big denim energy.
