Sewing trousers is rightfully considered one of the most difficult sections of tailoring. Even if the product fits perfectly in terms of length and circumference of the hips, unpleasant creases often appear in the groin, buttocks and waist areas, the fabric is overly stretched or, conversely, sags.
To achieve an ideal fit of trousers, you need to be able to correctly diagnose the cause by the nature of the folds. We analyze the main problems and ways to eliminate them on the pattern.
1. Horizontal folds under the buttocks (“smile”)
If semi-circular or horizontal folds form under the buttocks, this indicates that the back half of the trousers does not have enough depth or length along the middle seam (seat line), or the angle of the middle seam is too steep.
How to fix it on a pattern:
- Increase the length of the middle seam on the back half by lowering the seat line down by 0.5–1.5 cm.
- Pull the top of the middle seam back slightly, adding just the right amount of volume to create a natural curve to your butt.
2. Oblique creases from the crotch to the thigh
If, when walking or standing, oblique folds-rays diverge from the groin towards the side seams, it means that the crotch seam of the front or back half was too short or narrow for your anatomical shape of the hips.
How to fix it on a pattern:
- Check the width of the stepping wedge at groin level.
- Release the inseam allowance at the fitting (if fabric reserves allow) or add 0.5–1.2 cm to the bow line on the front half, gradually tapering off the increase towards the knee.
3. Pants “pull” in the front or cut into the groin
If the middle front seam is pulled vertically and causes discomfort when walking, the base pattern has insufficient front seat height.
How to fix it on a pattern:
- Cut the front half pattern horizontally at the hip line and move the pieces apart by 0.5–1 cm, increasing the vertical length.
- Deepen the arc of the bow line along the middle cut in front, smoothly moving to the waist line.
4. Folds on the waist and back on the lower back
If the belt lags behind the back or a bag of excess fabric gathers at waist level:
How to fix it on a pattern:
- Deepen the waist darts on the back half of the trousers, or add a second pair of darts to smoothly hug the arch of the lower back.
- Adjust the top cut of the back half by removing excess fabric along the middle seam (cutting the wedge at the top center of the back).
Prevention for perfect trouser tailoring
- Always sew a pattern: Create a test pattern of trousers using inexpensive cotton (calico) before cutting wool, linen or suit crepe.
- Take the Seat Height Measurement:Measuring your seat height while sitting on a hard chair (from your waistline to the side of the chair) is a key measure of ideal trouser balance.
- Wet-heat treatment (WTO trousers):Be sure to pull back the crotch seam of the back half and press under the buttocks before sewing down the parts.
