Как правильно обработать шлицу в юбке или жакете пошаговая технология

A garment vent (slit) is a classic tailoring element that provides freedom of movement while preserving a sleek, fitted silhouette. Vents are most commonly constructed along the center back seam of pencil skirts, sheath dresses, as well as on the back and sleeves of tailored blazers and coats.

Many novice sewists feel intimidated by this tailoring technique due to the precision required for aligning corners, clipping seam allowances, and pressing without leaving seam imprints on the right side of the fabric. Let''s break down the step-by-step method for finishing a classic open vent.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • Garment main fabric and lining (if your project includes a lining).
  • Fusible stay tape (1–1.5 cm wide) or lightweight fusible interfacing to stabilize seam allowances.
  • Tailor''s pins, matching sewing thread, tailor''s chalk or disappearing fabric marker.
  • Steam iron and a wooden tailor''s clapper to set crisp pressed edges without shine.

Step-by-Step Vent Construction Guide

Step 1. Preparation and Interfacing

The vent is typically located along the center back seam of the skirt or jacket. During cutting, one-piece vent extensions are drafted with a width of approximately 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches).

Always stabilize the vent area from the wrong side:

  • On the overlapping (upper) side of the vent, interface the entire vent extension, extending 1–2 mm past the fold line.
  • On the underlap (lower) side, apply a strip of fusible stay tape along the raw edge to prevent stretching.
  • Carefully transfer the fold lines and the vent apex mark with tailor''s chalk.

Step 2. Stitching the Center Seam Above the Vent

  1. Place the right and left garment panels right sides together, aligning notches and the waistline.
  2. Stitch the center back seam from the top down exactly to the vent apex mark. Backstitch securely at the end of the seam.
  3. From the seam endpoint, make a clean diagonal clip into the seam allowance of the underlap at a 45-degree angle, stopping 1–2 mm before the stitch line. This allows the seam above the vent to be pressed open while the vent extensions turn smoothly to one side.

Step 3. Corner Finishing and Hemming

Press the center seam open above the vent using a tailor''s ham or seam roll. Fold the vent extensions to the wrong side along the marked fold lines and press firmly with steam, setting the creases with a wooden tailor''s clapper.

Miter or box the bottom corner of the overlap: fold right sides together, stitch across the hem allowance at 45 degrees, trim the excess corner bulk, turn right side out, and gently poke out the point using a point turner.

Fold up the bottom hem of the garment, baste in place, and finish with blind catch stitches by hand or machine according to your garment specifications.

Step 4. Securing the Vent from the Right Side

Carefully align the overlap and underlap of the vent, pinning them flat so the center seam line remains perfectly straight.

From the right side of the garment, sew a diagonal or horizontal securing topstitch (at a 45-degree angle or straight across) approximately 1–1.5 cm above the vent apex. This reinforcing stitch holds both layers firmly and prevents tearing under walking tension.

Give the finished vent a thorough final press using a pressing cloth.

Pro Tips for a Flawless Vent

  • Never skip interfacing: without stay tape, the vent corners and fold lines will stretch out and ripple during wear.
  • Check thread tension: the diagonal topstitch on the right side must lie completely flat without puckering the fabric.
  • Use a wooden clapper: applying a wooden tailor''s clapper immediately after steam pressing gives the vent razor-sharp, professional edges without shiny pressure marks.
