Required Materials and Tools
- Main fabric — stretch cotton twill, ripstop, linen, or heavy French terry (1.4–1.8 m);
- Pocket lining — lightweight cotton (0.3 m);
- Heavy woven elastic — 4–5 cm wide;
- Fusible interfacing for pocket flaps;
- Sewing machines — standard lockstitch machine, 4-thread serger, steam iron.
Step 1. Assembling and Turning the Pocket Flap
Interface the upper flap, stitch along three edges, trim corners at 45 degrees, turn right side out, press with an understitch roll, and edgestitch at 5 mm.
Step 2. Attaching the Cargo Patch Pocket
Hem top pocket edge, press side and lower seam allowances inward using a cardboard guide, and edgestitch to the side leg piece. Position and stitch the flap above the opening.
Step 3. Constructing Slanted Side Hip Pockets
Interface pocket entries, stitch pocket lining to front leg, understitch, press, and serge pocket bags together along outer curves.
Step 4. Serging Side, Inseam, and Crotch Seams
Serge side seams and inseams. Nest one leg inside the other right sides facing and serge continuous crotch seam, reinforcing with a straight lockstitch.
Step 5. Installing the Elastic Waistband
Join wide elastic into a loop with an overlapping multi-stitch zigzag. Quarter mark elastic and waistband, insert elastic into folded band, and serge to waistline.
Step 6. Multi-Row Elastic Topstitching & Hemming
Stretch waistband evenly while sewing 2–3 parallel topstitch rows to prevent elastic twisting. Hem lower leg openings.
