How to Pattern and Cut a Flap Patch Pocket: Part 1 — Drafting, Proportions & Cutting
Watch Video Lesson

The impeccable finish of a flap patch pocket begins at the drafting and cutting table. Precision at this initial stage determines whether your pocket corners will be razor-sharp, whether the pocket proportions harmonize with the garment silhouette, and whether the fabric will stay smooth without sagging after laundering. In Part 1 of this hands-on masterclass, we explore pocket proportion guidelines, rigid pressing template creation, grainline alignment, and accurate cutting techniques.

Tools & Materials for Drafting and Cutting

  • Main garment fabric (cotton twill, denim, linen, canvas);
  • Heavy pressing template cardboard (0.5–1 mm);
  • Drafting paper or grid ruler;
  • Metal ruler, 90-degree square, rotary cutter or dressmaker shears;
  • Tailor's chalk or disappearing fabric marker.

Step 1. Pocket & Flap Proportions

Chest pockets generally measure 12–14 cm wide by 14–16 cm high. Cargo and hip pockets measure 16–20 cm wide by 18–22 cm high. Flaps are cut 1/3 to 1/4 of total pocket height.

Step 2. Drafting Rigid Cardboard Pressing Templates

Draft the finished pocket dimensions on cardstock. Measure diagonals to ensure perfect 90-degree corners. Draft flap matching pocket width.

Step 3. Calculating Seam and Hem Allowances

Add 2.5–3.5 cm hem allowance to top pocket edge, 1.0–1.2 cm to side and bottom edges. Add 0.7 cm to flap outer edges.

Step 4. Grainline Alignment on Fabric

Cut pocket and flap strictly along straight grainline to prevent sagging or diagonal stretching during wear.

Step 5. Clean Cutting and Alignment Notches

Trace cleanly and cut with sharp shears. Add 2 mm notches at top hem folds and flap center points.
