Lightweight, durable athletic soccer shorts are an essential piece of sports gear for competitive players and fitness enthusiasts alike. Soccer apparel undergoes extreme dynamic stretch during sprints, pivots, and tackles. Therefore, proper construction demands high-tensile elastic serging, balanced rise depth, a secure elastic-drawstring waistband, and an internal breathable mesh liner brief. In this masterclass, we explore the end-to-end sewing workflow for functional soccer shorts on domestic equipment.

Materials and Activewear Notions
- Moisture-wicking athletic polyester mesh or interlock (130–150 gsm);
- Lightweight stretch mesh for the inner brief liner;
- Wide elastic webbing (3.5–4.0 cm);
- Flat athletic drawstring (1.2–1.4 m) and two metal eyelets (4–5 mm);
- Super Stretch needles (#75/80) and textured polyester serger thread.
Cutting Pattern Pieces and Seam Allowances
Cut front and back panels strictly parallel to the vertical knit grain. The back rise is cut significantly deeper and longer than the front to ensure coverage during athletic movements. Add 0.7 cm serger allowances and 2.5 cm for hems.
Assembling the Internal Mesh Brief Liner
Serge liner side seams and crotch gusset. Bind leg openings with soft elastic braid. Baste the top edge of the liner to the main shorts waistline.
Serging Side and Inseam Seams
With right sides facing, serge side seams (stopping 5 cm before bottom for side mobility slits if desired). Then serge inseam continuously across both legs.
Reinforcing the High-Stress Crotch Seam
Align crotch intersection with right sides together. Serge the U-shaped seam and reinforce with a narrow stretch zigzag stitch on the lockstitch machine.
Constructing the Drawstring Elastic Waistband
Reinforce eyelet zone with interfacing. Install two eyelets 3 cm apart. Fold waistband casing over elastic and liner, serge closed with stretch stitch, and thread drawstring through channel.
Coverstitching Hems and Side Slits
Fold 2 cm hem allowances and stitch on a coverstitch machine or with twin needles. Bar-tack side slits for tear resistance.
Always back eyelets on lightweight polyester activewear with a sturdy grosgrain or twill ribbon scrap. This prevents the metal grommet from tearing through the synthetic knit under drawstring tension.
Tailor's Advice for Durable Sports Seams
- Use fluffy textured threads in looper positions for chafing-free seam softness;
- Double-stitch the crotch curve to withstand intense athletic movement;
- Stitch horizontal rows across the stretched elastic to prevent band roll.
Common Pitfalls in Athletic Shorts
- Rigid lockstitch seams that pop during squats;
- Blunt needles causing ladder runs in micro-mesh;
- Overtight waistband elastic restricting breathing during cardio.
